The Little Theatre of the Deaf is the children's wing of the National Theatre of the Deaf. Formed in 1968 to reach out to young audiences and their families, LTD performs original works, classic stories, fables and poems. Each year, LTD gives live performances to thousands of children and adults in schools and theatres across the United States. In addition, LTD tours internationally and has performed in India, Mexico, Germany, Japan, China, Russia, and New Zealand.
While LTD spends most of the time giving live performances, many people have experienced LTD through the medium of television. In 1975, company member Linda Bove introduced LTD to a national audience when she became a regular member of the "Sesame Street" television cast on PBS. Since then, the cast of LTD have gone on to make numerous appearances on "Sesame Street" (most recently in the spring of 2006) as well as an appearance on the Disney Channel series ""Out of the Box"" in 2001.
The magic of LTD lies in its remarkable ability to entertain and educate at the same time. While the actors amaze the audience with their ability to make a lion roar, a tree bend, or the sun rise "in the palms of their hands", they are also broadening the awareness, understanding, and appreciation of Deaf culture. Further, by challenging stereotypes on language, communication, and disability, they promote diversity and inclusion within our society as a whole.
See, Hear, and Imagine, as the Little Theatre of the Deaf combines the spoken word with the visually dramatic American Sign Language -you'll See and Hear every word of a language that is for the eye, ear and the heart. Performing in American Sign Language and the Spoken word, the Little Theatre of the Deaf creates a dramatic new art-form, watch as words leap from our hands into your hearts. For those who know sign language, it entertains and adds to the pride of knowing the beautiful language of sign. For those who don't know sign language, it educates as well as entertains by providing an opportunity to learn some signs and have a greater understanding and appreciation of the third most used language in the United States. Learn about the culture and the people.
Both 50-minute programs are coupled with the ever popular and energetic, Your Game which is acclaimed for its interaction with the audience. By stressing artistic achievement, the LTD has demonstrated the power of art to bring about change.
